BEYOND THE CODE OF CONDUCT by K.M. Daughters

Posted by pumpupyourbook on June 15, 2009

Beyond the Code of ConductClosing Molly and Danny’s love story in Against Doctors Orders, we sighed and relished their happily ever after. Bobbie Leighton, Molly’s live in house keeper and caregiver to her daughter, Amy, was on the mend after suffering an attack from a crazed killer at the book’s conclusion. We trusted that she’d deal with her estrangement from the younger Sullivan brother, Joe, who had not only captured her interest, but had also captured that serial killer who had threatened her life.

But Bobbie lingered in our minds. And so did her love interest, Joe Sullivan. Wounded in the line, would Joe be bitter that he’d lost his career as the price for his bravery? Would Bobbie remain in Molly’s household as a caregiver, or would her brush with mortality change her life forever, too?

Those open-ended questions plagued us. What if Bobbie did change her life? She had toyed with aspiring to a law enforcement career on her way to a fateful dinner with Joe when the Henna Housewife Killer had attacked her. What if that didn’t short-circuit her career, but instead reinforced her desire to protect and serve? How could Joe Sullivan accept an inactive role in the homicide department? Wouldn’t he always strive to resurrect his career despite the unlikelihood that he could convince his superiors that he was fit for active duty?

Beyond The Code of Conduct became an inevitable necessity for us! We had to find out the answers to those questions and we were eager to know what happened to Joe and Bobbie. Ironically Bobbie excelled in law enforcement while Joe’s career stalled. Wouldn’t it be fun to see what that meant when they were reunited? And to make things more interesting, wouldn’t it be dangerous to cast them into an undercover operation where major life interests were at stake for both of them and see what happens?

Exploring this premise and writing Joe’s edgy character compared to the sweet, easygoing man depicted in Book 1 was more than fun. Bobbie had matured into an accomplished woman, able to deflect Joe’s barbs and keep her eye on the target. But could she remain impervious to Joe’s charms and forget the sweet man under his eye patch and chip on the shoulder exterior?

We don’t know if questions as a central basis for a story are common plot drivers for all writers, but for us, Book 2 in our series translated into answers. Bobbie and Joe could finally play out their beliefs that the story in Book 1 was really all about them.

DEAD RINGER by Mary Burton: “…characters that just grab me and seem to demand their own story.”

Posted by pumpupyourbook on November 10, 2008

dead-ringerIt never fails, when I’m wrapping up a novel, there are characters that just grab me and seem to demand their own story. That’s the way it was with DEAD RINGER and Christmas Past which is in the SILVER BELLS anthology with Fern Michaels, JoAnn Ross and Judy Duarte. The two female characters in my first romantic suspense I’M WATCHING YOU that needed their own stories were Kendall Shaw and Nicole Piper. Kendall Shaw was an over the top reporter in I’M WATCHING YOU and she was such a force that I knew if I paired her with Detective Jacob Warwick and gave them a great mystery to solve I had the makings of a great story. And Nicole Piper, who was also in I’M WATCHING YOU and DEAD RINGER, really needed her storyline wrapped up. She teams with Detective David Ayden in Christmas Past to solve a mystery. And I must say, Christmas Past turned out to be a sexy, exciting book.

LEFT TO DIE by Lisa Jackson: “…I knew I wanted to write a ‘back-woodsy’ kind of story…”

Posted by pumpupyourbook on August 20, 2008

My latest book LEFT TO DIE was an idea that evolved over the years. I knew I wanted to write a “back-woodsy” kind of story peppered with unique characters. I grew up in a small timber town and thought, after writing stories about New Orleans, San Francisco and Savannah, that I’d go back to my roots. Well, kinda. Montana has always held a certain appeal for me. Hence, the setting.

Also, a couple of years ago my editor came up with the idea that I should create a story with two women cops as the protagonists and I thought he’d lost it. Cagney and Lacey, the old cop show from the eighties came to mind and I thought “I’ll never pull this off. What did he want? The female version of The Odd Couple? I back-burnered that idea. Big time. Actually I put it in the wood stove in the guest house on the north forty of the property.

Anyway, years later, as I was coming up with characters for LEFT TO DIE Regan Pescoli, a twice married single mom of a cop entered the scene. A few pages later, her partner, Selena Alvarez, uptight, with secrets of her own, sauntered in.

Everything really came together when I met Jillian Rivers, the heroine of the book, who is driving hell-bent to Montana to find her louse of a first husband who let her think he was dead and also left her to deal with the investors he’d swindled.

These women absolutely intrigued me. Add to the mix a madman who leaves his victims to die along with a sexy loner who has a shady past and I was off and running with this story that truly was fun to write. You can read an excerpt and learn more about the book at www.lisajackson.com

I’M WATCHING YOU by Mary Burton: “I’m a sucker for a good, scary novel.”

Posted by pumpupyourbook on August 13, 2008

I’d been writing western historical romances and Silhouette Romantic Suspense novels for several years, and I loved it. But I’d always had a hankering to write a longer, darker suspense story. I’m a sucker for a good, scary novel. The character Lindsay O’Neil, the heroine in I’m Watching You, kept popping up and prodding me to tell her story. Even though I was on deadline, I decided to carve time from my day and work on Lindsay’s story. I’d work on the contracted novel by day and plot I’m Watching You by night. This must have taken eight or nine months. When I finally had the first three chapters and a synopsis, I sent it off to my agent. She was able to sell it to Kensington within a couple of weeks.
Mary Burton is the author of the Zebra Romantic Suspense novels I’M WATCHING YOU and the upcoming DEAD RINGER (November 2008) and Christmas Past in the SILVER BELLS anthology (November 2008). She has also written twelve historical western romances for Harlequin Historical and four novels for Silhouette Romantic Suspense. For more information stop by her website at www.maryburton.com.
