The Story Behind Going for Excelsior: Thriving in Seniorhood by Wayne Hatford

Going for Excelsior sprang from a sense that senior issues needed to be addressed from a different vantage point, specifically, the Other Side. Yes, a channeled book about the Senior experience, a collaboration between myself, a recent arrival to that age group, and the spirit essence of Rudolph Valentino, in the role of consultant! An interesting premise, don’t you think?

Going for Excelsior

In becoming more aware of my own concerns about aging, and as a result of a brush or two with conditions that are often associated with being a Senior, I realized that I needed not only a better understanding of this stage of life but also a roadmap for successfully negotiating it. I started to brainstorm about topics and, at the same time, was inspired to use the concept of excelsior, its several definitions, to anchor the project. I wrote my part of the book based on personal observation while concurrently channeling Rudy’s input, his take on a number of challenges Seniors often face, and in that process had more than a few ‘Eureka’ moments. Writing this book was a lot of fun and I think that comes across in the text. However else you may choose to handle being ‘older,’ the bottom line is you’ve got to have fun with it!

Again, my impetus for writing GFE was that it was something I had to do, for myself, as well as for others, especially given my hunch that in doing so I was exploring new territory which was later confirmed by the Valentino essence. Truth be told, prior to this life-time, I apparently have not had all that much experience being old!

In many ways this book wrote itself, the words flying out of my pen or keyboard, as the case may be, fluttering and sputtering, then settling and jelling. And what was wrought, I think, is pretty marvelous, a blueprint for active living. I hope you will agree!
