When Sass Hogan catches her boyfriend slow-dancing and doing the tongue-tango with Tori Double-D-Cup Hunter, she pays him back the only way she knows how—by taking a tire iron to his beloved ’67 Mustang Fastback. There’s only one problem. She’s destroyed the wrong car.
Jordan Michaels wants his car fixed, now, and he wants Sass’s auto body shop to do it. But the handsome blond has a secret−he’s really Jordan Carlyle of Carlyle’s Classics, Hogan’s biggest competitor, and he’s determined to prove himself to his family.
As Sass and Jordan get to know each other, the depth of the attraction has them falling in love. But a relationship based on lies will only leave them primed for the worst wreck of their lives.
The Story Behind Mustang Sassy by Daire St. Denis
Classic cars, a fiery heroine, lies, deceit, spectacular car crashes…Mustang Sassy is more than a typical boy meets girl romance. The story begins with Sass Hogan catching her boyfriend playing tongue-tango with another woman while slow dancing in the local saloon. She pays him back by taking a tire iron to his ’67 Mustang Fastback only to discover the next day that she has smashed the wrong car and the rightful owner expects the family run auto body shop to repair it.
There are many layers of influence behind the writing of this story. The first scene, where Sass wreaks havoc on the car, is inspired by the song, Before He Cheats, by Carrie Underwood. While writing the scene, I drew on a similar experience from my youth and, through Sass, I was able to recall the overwhelming urge to destroy that is fueled by the hurt and rage of betrayal. I also imagined how fleeting satisfaction would be and Sass’s release is quickly replaced by a sense of shame at what she’s done, setting her up on a path of deceit and misunderstandings.
The second layer behind the story is that it is loosely based on the Taming of the Shrew. Shakespeare gets a nod in the book as does the 1999 movie retelling, 10 Things I Hate About You. After losing her mom as a child, Sass spends her whole life surrounded by men and thus finds it hard to navigate the world of femininity. She covers up her insecurity by calling the shots and keeping her heart closely guarded. She is a compilation of many characters and acquaintances including a childhood friend who lost her mom at a young age and struggled for many years to come to terms with the loss. There is even a little bit of myself in Sass. As the only girl and the youngest of three older brothers, I could relate to Sass’s tomboyish nature and her desire to do things just as well or better than the boys. As a kid, I was often mistaken for a little brother rather than a little sister partly because I tried to do everything my brothers did and partly because my mom only knew one haircut.
Once I started writing, however, Sass became her own person. She’s got a big personality and out of all of the characters I’ve ever written, she has been the most vocal, yelling at me—in my head—to hurry up and get her story down on paper. Jordan is the perfect match for Sass, more an anti-hero than a hero, he’s as much of a screw-up as Sass is and between the two of them, they set themselves up for one spectacular disaster after another.
There is a final element that must be noted in the story behind Mustang Sassy. The classic Mustang Sass so cruelly destroys in the book was inspired by a very dear friend of mine. He and his father restored classic cars and he drove a ’67 Fastback – which I thought was the coolest car ever. A ’59 Dodge Fargo truck makes an appearance in the story and it is the vehicle my friend used to teach me how to drive stick shift (three in the tree, baby!). It is with sadness and fond remembrance that I write this blog post today, as it just so happens that today is the tenth anniversary of his passing. Mustang Sassy is dedicated to his wife and family in his memory.
