The Story Behind The Path by Tawdra Kandle

The entire idea of the Crystal Cove Romances came to me shortly after I’d finished my first four books, which were a YA paranormal romance quartet. I spent a day at the beach to celebrate finishing the final book, and on the way home, I began to think about my favorite restaurant. And as I did, the story of Jude, the recently-widowed owner of the Riptide, and her The Pathhusband’s group of friends, the posse, fell into my lap.

Once I’d begun to write about Crystal Cove, new characters were born. I had planned The Posse to be a stand-alone contemporary romance, but it soon became clear that it would be a series. I intended the second and third books to be about other members of the posse and their quest for love, but by the time The Posse ended, there was only one single member left.

So The Plan was Cooper and Emmy’s book, and I realized that the third book would center around Abby Donavan, the woman who’d come to town to run Jude and Logan’s bed and breakfast. A few months before I began their book, my husband and I stayed in a hotel in New Smyrna Beach (the real-life inspiration for Crystal Cove), and I realized that Abby would be running a new hotel in town.

And so it unfolded: Jude and Logan found the dilapidated Riverside, bought the property and hired Ryland Kent to restore it and Abby Donavan to run it. Abby was clearly a very controlled, strong woman, and Ryland was creative and impulsive. There was no doubt that sparks were going to fly.

Abby’s character is probably closer to my own than any of the other Crystal Cove heroines. She moved a lot as a child, which I understand. She’s careful to control her environment as much as possible. And some important people in my own life inspired characters in her story: like Abby, I have a very dear Auntie and Uncle in the Bay Area of California, and as in the story, my own Auntie fueled my love for and knowledge of Chinese food.
