It’s a little scary knowing that my new book is going to reveal some of my silliness, but hey, that’s just how I roll. Other than a walk across the border from San Diego, CA (USA) to Tijuana, Mexico, I had never stepped outside of the United States until 15 years ago. My friend told me, “Don’t put off traveling. You should travel and see things now because you never know what could happen tomorrow and you might not be able to do it.”
And so I did. Fast forward to today and I’ve been to all 50 states in the USA plus somewhere between 55 and 58 other countries. Those trips have produced some wonderful friends all across the globe and some hilarious stories of things that I did or that I saw other people do during these trips. That is the inspiration for my new book, “Oh Ship! Tales of a Cruising Chick and Other Travel Adventures.”
Many of my travels have been via cruising, which is what inspired the “Oh Ship!” part of the title. As they say (usually with one different letter at the end), “Ship Happens.” Cruises can be quite the adventure within an adventure if you keep your eyes open and watch the little dramas that are going on among the people aboard the ship. From stories of passengers pepper-spraying other passengers to grown men fighting over glass figurines of penguins, you’ll laugh until your ribs hurt and probably end up saying, “Oh Ship!”
Everyone needs to travel, if not to foreign lands, at least outside of their own city or state. .” I have learned so much more about the world and even about myself by traveling and seeing other people, cultures, and history. I like what Mark Twain said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
