My background is in science and technology so I have an interest in many things that come from the science and tech world. One of the topics that intrigued me was artificial intelligence. Recently we have seen IBM’s Watson win at Jeopardy and Google’s Deep Mind defeat the world Go champion. There are also products available that you can put in your home such as Amazon’s Echo and Google Home.
Companies are working hard to get inside of our heads. For example, when I buy something online, my Facebook feed will contain ads for similar products. Sometimes, these are eerily accurate in anticipating my needs for another product. Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere and getting more and more intelligent.
I thought about questions such as: what would happen if AI reached an advanced state of intelligence? Or, could AI get to higher states of intelligence by using information from someone’s brain? If it did, would it develop its own ideas about such concepts as survival, global warming, pollution and greed?
This led to the creation of the main character, Dr. Alan Boyd, an AI guru with a dysfunctional past. Dr. Boyd finds a way to combine the information in part of his brain with a computer program with the goal of producing the ultimate servant. He thinks the program will serve him by completing mundane tasks and anticipating his needs. The problem arises that the AI, Alan 2 has its own ideas about what its purpose is.
Alan 2 is my second novel and eighth book overall including some non-fiction and self-published titles. My first novel, The X-Cure was picked up by Open Books in the Summer of 2015.
After completing the manuscript for The X-Cure, I sent it out to a number of agents and received a number of rejections. I then began to target mid-sized to boutique publishers and sent out a few more targeted queries. After a couple of months, Open Books offered me a contract. After The X-Cure was released, they offered to publish Alan 2.

About the Book:
A brilliant artificial intelligence (AI) scientist, Dr. Alan Boyd, develops a new program that integrates part of his brain with a computer’s operating system. The program, Alan 2, can anticipate a user’s needs and automatically perform many tasks. A large software company, International Microsystems (IM) desperately wants the program and tempts Dr. Boyd with huge sums of money, but when Dr. Boyd refuses their offer, IM sabotages his job, leaving him in a difficult financial situation.
Dr. Boyd turns to Alan 2 for an answer to his financial problems, and Alan 2 develops plan Alpha, which is a cyber robin hood scheme to rob from rich corporations via a credit card scam.
Alan and his girlfriend Kaitlin travel to Mexico where they live the good life funded by plan Alpha, but the FBI cybercrime division has discovered part of Alan 2’s cyber escapades, and two agents, Rachel and Stu, trace the crime through the TOR network and Bitcoin.
Alan 2 discovers the FBI is on to them and advises Alan and Kaitlin to change locations. A dramatic chase ensues taking them to St. Thomas, a cruise ship bound for Spain, and finally to Morocco.
Will they escape detection? They will if Alan 2’s Plan Beta can be implemented in time. Or is ‘Plan B’ something altogether different than it appears to be, something wholly sinister that will affect the entire population of the world?
