The Story Behind Spider Brains by Susan Wingate

It all happened early one morning, when my husband got up for work. I was still lying in bed, groggy and bleary-eyed when I thought I noticed something strange. My husband had just walked into the bathroom and flipped the light switch. The stark incandescence shone against the dark ceiling and there, not too far from the bed a spider clung and was making its way across the ceiling close to the ceiling fan. I thought about retrieving the tiny creature, using a cup and a sheet of paper to capture it and then set it free outside. I imagined myself standing on the bed to get it. The circling fan posed the biggest problem to do so. I envisioned myself standing up and getting cold-cocked by one of the fan’s blades. However, before I could even move to my feet, a story flashed across my mind about a teenaged girl who sees a spider on her ceiling and decides to talk to the thing then to bond with it and ultimately allow it to get onto her finger so she can set it free outside. For about an hour I wrote notes covering the over-arching idea which resulted in the novel SPIDER BRAINS: A LOVE STORY.
